I didn’t just slice the strap on a new knife, I guided the knife in with my finger, and being very sharp, it went into my finger. Being extremely careful is so important! I love leather crafts, but have huge respect for sharp.

Tanner, 1st... I quickly tapped the thumbs up 👍 button to feed the algorithm monsters. 2nd .... I don't want to disappoint you, but I have no interest in leather working. 3rd... I needed your class so I can manually sew pieces of carpet together with string. I am going to overlap two pieces at a time and use two rows of the saddle sitch about an inch apart. I don't need any cosmetic or strength. Eventually, the carpet will be covered with pee-gravel. The stiching is only to prevent the dehiscence of the two pieces and to prevent gravel from getting under the carpet. There will never be tention on the stiching. Nor will it ever be visible. 4th... I'll be using needles that are similar to tapestry needles. Thanks again ! p.s. Is Tanner your real name? If sew (pun), what a coincidence. Leather tanning and your name, Tanner, go together like my veterinarian Dr. Barker....

the bag came out awesome. could you cut the strap width 2in wide and then fold it in half and sew it? that way you can use a smaller thickness leather and only have to finish one edge? i want to make this bag, but only have 4/5oz. leather on hand. thank you for sharing and explaining everything as well as you did. it is a huge help to a newbie like myself.

    • @ClaridgeLeather

Thanks for watching! I’m glad you found it helpful. 4 to 5 ounce Leather will make a great bag. You are exactly right, you can cut a 2 inch wide strap and double it over. One thing you could do also is fold both sides of that 2 inch strap to meet in the middle, so folding a half inch over from each side so they meet in the middle. Then sewtwo seams down the middle, leaving two finished edges on the 1” wide strap.

The sewing machine doesn’t ’make a knot.’ It does just what you showed, the top thread should loop down half way, and will be caught by the bottom thread which should come up halfway and catch that too thread. If they don’t each meet halfway, then you need to adjust your tension. You had it right when you showed it, but no, there’s no knot.
